How to Style – Head to Toe Tonal Outfits

This winter I have rather taken to tonal dressing. It’s not something I’ve had a particular interest in before – I tend to embrace coordinated clashing rather than all over colour cohesion – but lately I have found something soothing about being dressed all in the same shade.

There are two ways to tackle tonal dressing: dressing in different shades of the same colour or dressing head to toe all in the same hue. The path you take depends on what you have in your closet. In my experience, the creation of a winter tonal look is limited by the colour of your coats. Thankfully I have many a coloured coat on hand.

Here are four looks I pulled together from things already in my wardrobe.

Regal in Oxblood

Pretty in Pink

Verdant in Green

Burnt in Butter

Here are a few tips on tonal dressing:

  • it is much easier to create a look that is made up of different shades of the same colour rather than all the same hue
  • don’t be afraid to play with prints, they add a touch of fun
  • play with different textures, metallics and plush velvets prevent things from getting too matchy matchy and a touch of polish

As well as a near obsessive interest in fashion, Emma is a former scientist, occasional contemporary dancer, avid reader and self-confessed cat lady (she has three). Emma lived in Leiden in the Netherlands as a baby and Leiden ought to have been her middle name had her mother thought of it at the time and not chosen Louise instead.
