A note on the concept: The overwhelming majority of fashion imagery produced is concerned with traditional beauty ideals. Save a shocking lack of diversity, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing: fashion photography by its very nature is commercial. Images are designed to be aspirational and to incentivise us to buy, buy, buy.
But what if the purpose of the imagery is no longer to sell? Or if the identity of the model is no longer obvious? In creating this set of images I was interested in exploring the nature of fashion imagery and the way it is presented.
I also wanted to play with contrast, particularly the disconnection between facial expression and body positioning, between clothing and landscape and also between figures in space.
