Complaining about the winter weather in Canberra is practically a citywide pastime. A scroll through your Instagram feed will show you snaps of people wishing for warmer weather, sharing their best winter style, or marveling at their pets’ frozen over water bowl. Yes, defrosting our cars is annoying, and yes, it’s hard to drag yourself out of bed for a run when it’s still minus three outside, but for most of us, we have a nice, warm home to curl up in.
For a lot of people, however this isn’t the case. Up to 2000 people experience homelessness each night in the ACT, at least half of which are women. This number includes those sleeping on the street as well as people in temporary accommodation, community housing and crisis refuges.
Two of our favourite Canberra boutiques are teaming up to try and do something about it. Pink Ink and Rebel Muse have created a social initiative, Pink’s Rebel Cause, to help women experiencing homelessness combat the cold Canberra winter. From the 13th of July to the 13th of August each boutique is calling for donations of warm, clean, quality coats.
Each coat donated will be delivered directly to the women in need via established social services. In order to further help women, feminine hygiene products will be placed in the pockets of each garment.
For each donation of a coat made, Pink Ink and Rebel Muse are offering a $50 gift voucher redeemable towards new season collections. Donations of feminine hygiene products or money to go towards the purchase of them will also be gratefully received by each boutique.
