Talking Shoes and Accessories with Alicia Xyrakis

With her new footwear and accessories boutique Peachy Keen just over a month old, we sat down with owner, buyer and all round lovely lady Alicia Xyrakis to talk all things shoes and handbags.

Emma: What core styles do you think every woman needs in her shoe wardrobe?

  • Nude stiletto point toe pumps
  • Black strappy heels
  • Nude sandals with some sort of heel (a block heel is great to take you through spring/summer occasions)
  • black closed toe flats in the form of loafers, brogues or similar. Make sure your flat shoes have a proper sole on them and are a bit raised at the heel. Personally, I don’t believe in the ‘ballet slipper’ style flats. You may as well not be wearing shoes.
  • Birkenstocks or slides (bye bye havaianas)
  • Black closed toe pumps
  • Black boots with a low-mid thick heel
  • At least one pair of fun statement shoes
  • A pair of cute sandshoes or sneakers
  • And if you want something on trend for the season, it has to be a Mule!

Is that too many? But seriously, if you have these 10 types of shoes you will have a shoe to go with every outfit and for every occasion through all seasons. Make sure you have enough closed toe shoe options, I don’t believe in wearing open shoes in winter.

E: Heels or flats?

A: If you asked me this questions a year ago, I definitely would have said heels. But there are so many cool flats going around these days that I’ve converted! I am also loving sneakers now and especially a pair of cute little white sandshoes. Shoes can totally transform an outfit, so it all depends on what mood I’m in. I like to wear the same dress with heels or with sneakers for a totally different look.

E: What is your all time favourite pair of shoes?

A: My over the knee Jimmy Choo boots. I don’t have many high end designer items, I definitely save up and invest in the special one off pieces. I bought these as a birthday present to myself this year which was my 28th birthday and it was also Rebel Muses 1st birthday. I thought I deserved them. They are full leather with a 5cm silver block heel. They were definitely worth the investment.

E: What are your favourite shoe labels?

A: I love Senso, Mode Collective, and Jaggar, which are all currently available in store. Then I also am a huge fan of Aquazzura, Alexander Wang, Jeffrey Campbell and Sophia Webster. Hopefully we will have all these in store one day too!

E: What bag are you carrying at the moment?

A: 9-5 I carry my beloved Bally briefcase looking bag. It has a laptop compartment in it and fits my notebook etc. that I need for work. Weekends I have my Dylan Kain LSC. These are available in store at Peachy Keen. They are the most versatile bags! It’s two small bags that are magnetized together. It comes with a long cross body strap and a short chain strap. So you can wear it out during the day as a cross body bag or just use half of it with a small chain strap for an evening bag.

E: Do you carry the same bag for a season or do you like to switch it up depending on your outfit?

A: I don’t change my bag often. I will invest in 1 or 2 good leather bags that will be my main go to bags for a year or two. I also have a couple fun statement clutches that I will sometimes switch it up with.

E: Do you believe in investing the big bucks in a designer bag or spreading your hard earned dollars across multiple options?

A: I believe in investing into a good designer bag, it will last you years! But in saying that, the amount you spend on your bag should be relative to where you are in your life and how much you earn etc. You must be smart and wise when investing in a bag. I wouldn’t recommend for someone in their early 20s to buy a $4000 Prada. There are some good mid range bag brands (like Dylan Kain) that do great quality bags at a bit more of an affordable price range, around $350-$600. They will still last you a long time without putting you in debt.

E: What is your go-to bag for a night out?

A: My little Dylan Kain LSC! I can use one half of it with its little gold strap. Otherwise I also like fun, colourful clutches that are usually just cheap and cheerful and don’t match my outfit at all.

E: Do you like to build an outfit starting from the shoes or are they a finishing touch?

A: I’m such mood dresser, so it depends on what I’m feeling. If I feel like wearing a certain pair of shoes, then I will work my outfit around that. Or if I feel like wearing a certain skirt, then the rest of the outfit will work around that.

E: If you were a pair of shoes what style would you be?

A: Well it’s funny you ask that, because I have just had a pair of shoes named after me! A dear friend of mine is launching her own shoe brand, Morimoto, in early 2017! The shoes are being made in Italy at the same factory as Gucci! I have helped her out a little bit here and there with designs and styles and probably just mostly with emotional support. So she named her classic stiletto pump after me! Which I think is quiet fitting. It’s a timeless shape but can be changed up each season with different colours, leathers, textures etc. SO I guess I would be a classic pump, hopefully with a fun twist to it.
