Wellness with Bianca Cheah of Sporteluxe

Last weekend we headed out to a masterclass with Bianca Cheah put on by the Canberra Centre as part of their holistic health and wellbeing event, Eden. Bianca is the founder and editor of online destination Sporteluxe, a digital publication exploring health and wellness as well as beauty and fashion through a wellness lens.

Bianca is a highly respected social media influencer and is dedicated to sharing her wellness philosophy through her online and social platforms. ‘I founded Sporteluxe in 2012 as a personal blog. I was so engrossed in the fitness industry at the time but I couldn’t find a website that combined health, wellness, and fashion. I wanted to create a space where you could find all wellness info in one spot,’ she explained.

‘It started as a personal passion. I had my finger in a lot of pies; I was a qualified interior designer, I modeled during the day and worked as a waitress at night. I got a lot of negativity from my friends and loved ones to start with. They were like “get a real job, why are you spending so much time on this?” But for me it’s about being happy and doing what I love, following my dreams and passions. I wake up and I want to go work.’

Her combination of content has undeniably struck a chord with a vast number of people as after five years of success here in Australia, the publication is expanding to Los Angeles. ‘It’s just snowballed,’ Bianca said. ‘I never, ever thought that it would be as big as it has become. Expanding to LA has doubled our traffic. We want to expand over there and we want to become a global destination for wellness.’

For Bianca, wellness is about balance and what you do on your own personal journey to being the best version of yourself. It’s a lifestyle and it encompasses your whole life. So how does a wellness expert look after herself? ‘I try to create time for myself every single day. I call it me time. If I didn’t have this time I would probably be a ball of stress. For me, my me time is yoga, I love it. Being present, bringing my focus back down and having time not thinking about anything recharges my brain.’

Just like fashion and beauty has its trends, so too does the wellness industry. One of the most common questions Bianca gets asked regards the current trends in health and wellness. ‘The latest thing in LA at the moment is the billion dollar smoothie. It has 30 ingredients in it and one of them is a special mushroom. My husband tried it and said it was disgusting. Crickets as a protein form is big, you can get protein bars made from mushed up crickets. Also turmeric lattes and anti-inflammatory diets are having a moment.’

As fun as trends are, it’s important to not get caught up in the latest fads and strive to find a wellness journey that is right for you and your body. As a publication that also places a strong focus on producing holistic health and fitness content, we at Leiden found what Bianca had to say resonated strongly with us. It was a pleasure to hear her speak and we will definitely be keeping our eye on Sporteluxe.
