The athleisure market is booming and nowhere has the movement been more embraced it seems than in Australia, with Sydney-siders at the forefront. For the uninitiated, ‘athleisure’ describes an approach to dressing that mixes fashion forward exercise pieces with more casual resort wear. The look is polished and fashion forward while maintaining a focus on comfort.

Deborah Symond embodies this approach to dressing, making her the perfect poster child for her business Mode Sportif. When the athleisure trend was first starting to gain momentum, Symond was quick to capitalise. She launched online destination Mode Sportif in 2013, bringing together a unique mix of luxury and activewear labels, a combination that hadn’t really been brought together in the one retail location before.

Moving in the opposite direction to most other retailers (brick and mortar first, e-commerce second), after building an international customer base online, Mode Sportif has now opened its first physical store in Paddington, Sydney. Like the online store, the boutique stocks a tight edit of labels such as Etre Cecile, The Upside, and 3.1 Phillip Lim.
