When you think of Cooma, a country town in the Monaro region of New South Wales, you think of Snowy Hydro scheme. Or maybe just snow. What doesn’t immediately come to mind is fashion. But that would be your mistake because for the second time the region is hosting a fashion event. Presented by The Community Chest and sponsored by Australian Wool Innovation, Fashionation, will showcase the work of local designers as well as highlight the region’s wool industry.
Wool is a highly sought after fibre in the fashion industry as it is natural, versatile and desirable. “The Monaro is famous for it’s merino wool and this is such a wonderful opportunity to connect everyone in the farm to fashion chain for a special evening of fashion with the added benefit of raising vital funds for our local community,” explains Marnie Stewart, chair of The Community Chest.
The eleven designers featured will participate in three categories: Wool collection, Open collection and Australian Wool Challenge. “This time we are asking the designers to create a challenge piece using Australian wool,” said Marnie. “Given the standard of design we saw in the 2014 show I’m really excited to see the garments that will be revealed on the night.” If you like what you see in the Australian Wool Challenge category, have your wallet ready, as challenge pieces will be auctioned off later in the evening.
Ticket holders will gain access to the Fashionation show, a pre-show drink and canapés, entry to the Challenge auction, designer pop-up shops and a post show bar. Plus a glimpse of 90’s supermodel Anneliese Suebert. If you haven’t managed to get your hands on a ticket (the event is now sold out but taking names on a wait list) you can still buy a raffle ticket. First prize has been generously donated by the major sponsor of the event, Australian Wool Innovation and includes return premium economy flights to Paris and accommodation for two people as well as the opportunity to attend the final of the International Woolmark Prize. This prestigious prize is designed to showcase excellence and innovation in design using Merino wool.
Finalists from six different regions are selected and a panel of industry heavyweights judges both the Women’s and Menswear categories. While the 2016/17 Womenswear panel is yet to be announced, previous judges include Victoria Beckham, Vogue Italia Editor Franca Sozzani, and Alexa Chung. Previous winners of the prize in the Australia/New Zealand region include the likes of Dion Lee, Christopher Esber and Bianca Spender.
Leiden Magazine will be attending Fashionation on the night to bring you coverage, runway reports and social photography. We will be buying our fair share of raffle tickets, and who knows, perhaps we will soon be reporting to you from the final of the International Woolmark Prize.
