Reclaim
Among the works featured in the latest group exhibition at Craft ACT, ‘Reclaim’, are three jumpers. All folds and tucks of wool, these sculptural pieces call out to be touched and examined from every angle. Designed by one of Canberra’s best known independent fashion labels, Corr Blimey, they bear all the hallmarks of the label: innovative design, sustainable and ethical practice, and a certain theatricality in the finished product. Designers Louisa de Smet and Steven Wright launched Corr Blimey in 2001 and have continued to push the boundaries of design ever since, building a cult following and cementing the… Continue Reading
The Perfection of Style
A wonderful new exhibition displaying a beautiful collection of the seminal designer Yves Saint Laurent came to my hometown, Seattle, this October. The Seattle Art Museum is host to this inspiring collection featuring over 110 complete outfits spanning more than 40 years of Laurent’s career. The outfits ranged Laurent’s innovative ready-to-wear collections to custom made couture pieces. YSL saved everything when he started his own fashion house in 1962, the collection features an amazing range of outfit sketches and fabric samples, giving an incredible insight into his creative process. From the moment I entered the exhibition rooms I was… Continue Reading
Designer Profile: crbn
A little while ago we had the pleasure of attending the launch of a gender neutral clothing label, crbn in Sydney. Designed by Whitney Duan, the first crbn (pronounced carbon) collection featured striking minimalist pieces able to be transformed by the personality of the wearer, no matter their gender. I was so drawn to the collection that I ordered a piece the very next day. When my slightly subversive bandage skirt arrived, it was just as perfect for my hourglass figure as it had appeared on the man who wore it on the runway. I wanted to find out more… Continue Reading
Designer Profile – Lady Albert
We first had the pleasure of meeting Erin Louise, the talented designer behind Lady Albert at Fashionation in Cooma. We were so intrigued by her designes that we wanted to find out more. Leiden: What is your earliest fashion memory? Erin: House of Elliot, it’s a TV show set in the 1930s that was on when I was in primary school. I loved it. Pretty sure my friend and I used to get into trouble for not doing our school work because we spent all our time talking about the show. I love the fantasy that fashion can… Continue Reading
