Leiden’s Second Birthday: A Letter from the Editor

Today Leiden turns two which means it is approximately two years, six months and three days since the idea for this publication first blossomed in my head during a fateful drive home after a meeting with friends. From March 1, 2016 we have soared, flailed, laughed, cried and eaten a hell of a lot of Book Club snacks, all while creating and publishing hundreds of pieces of original content. 585 to be numerically exact. Before I get a little self indulgent, I want to thank each and every single person who has ever contributed to this publication. I am… Continue Reading

Why We Are Taking A Break

2017 has been a big year for Leiden. We turned one year old in March and to celebrate we launched our first ever print publication, an online store and our very own Book Club. To coincide with Canberra’s annual fashion event FASHFEST in late September we released our second print zine and launched Leiden Podcast, a fortnightly podcast discussing anything and everything with a range of contributors and guests. In November we published our first ever book on ethical and sustainable fashion ‘Building a Conscious Wardrobe‘ at ethical design event Fashionably Numb. And we did all that while continuing… Continue Reading

Turning Twenty Nine – Reflections on Entering the Last Year of My Twenties

I have always maintained a child-like devotion to birthdays, particularly my own. Given that there are only a mere twenty days separating my special day from Christmas, I have always had a desire to differentiate my birthday as much as possible from festive celebrations. This year December fifth marks twenty-nine years since I came into this world mewling, flailing and rather florid in colour. As I creep ever closer to the big three-oh, I have been reflecting on all the things I have achieved in my twenties and all the things I haven’t got around to doing yet but… Continue Reading

The Obligatory First Day of Spring Wardrobe Reflection

Today is the first day of spring. I know you are thinking ‘not another person celebrating the change of season’ but as someone who lives to get dressed, I’m sorry, but I am going to reflect on the sartorial possibilities the warmer weather will bring. Here is what I am looking forward to:   Bare Legs   After months of cocooning my unshaven legs in stockings, I am looking forward to being able to let my legs see the light of day again. I had to go all the way back to April to find a photo of me exposing… Continue Reading

Reflections on My First Week of Unemployment

Now, dear reader, this post will not offer any advice on how to avoid unemployment or how to be successful at finding a new job because lord knows I am no expert on those things (meanwhile, if you want to know how to style coloured stockings that is something I can offer advice on) it is merely a reflection on my current state of joblessness. Earlier this year I took the risk of leaving my unfulfilling yet permanent day job for a three-month contract in the Australian Public Service. And while I doubled my income, which allowed me to… Continue Reading

A Few Outfits

Polka Dot Party Dress: Gorman Bag: Vintage Chanel Shoes: Miu Miu The Look: Flirty black layers with pops of pink, what’s not to love? This dress comes as two separate dresses making it super good value. I bought it in Melbourne and discovered the security tag was still on when I got home. My boyfriend Jesse smashed it off with a hammer so I could wear it to the opening night of the Ladies in Black musical. Balenciaga for Less Dress: H&M Shoes: MR by Man Repeller The Look: This is another bargain that I picked up from H&M in… Continue Reading

A Few of the Times I Got Dressed This Week

Layer City Dress: Country Road Skirt: Alexa Chung x AG Jeans Ring: Dior The Look: I am not sure why but on this day I felt compelled to wear a skirt over a dress. I blame Instagram. I don’t anyone at my day job appreciated this look (I got a few double takes) and my own mother questioned my decision, but hey I liked it. The Queen of Ruffles Top: Miu Miu Skirt: Country Road Shoes & Bag: Gucci The Look: This is one of my all time favourite shirts. It sat on my Net-a-Porter wishlist for months until it… Continue Reading
