Swimwear 2017 Range from Skye Group.

In February 2017 Skye Group, the masterminds behind swim collections from Sunseeker, Jantzen and Poolproof began showing their 2017/2018 Summer range. While the designs are still under secrecy I can share with you a few tid bits to keep you going until the release in June. The Summer 2016/2017 range from Skye Group had some excellent design stories which were well received such as Bahama Leaf , a nice take on traditional black and white) and Aquitaine, a vibrational stripe which looked exciting in so many styles. Personally, outside of that I found their last collection repetitive (small detailed… Continue Reading

But before we have the opportunity to find out Huw’s tips for developing a personal style and taking on this season’s trends at tomorrow’s masterclass, we wanted to find out a bit more about the man himself.   Leiden: What drew you to a career in fashion? On Style and Socks

“Menswear is about subtlety. It’s about good style and good taste.” – Alexander McQueen   When I was a boy I took little interest in the clothing I wore. It was, to me, a purely utilitarian thing, designed to protect ones modesty from the elements, and to preserve the modesty of ones elements. It served these purposes and no more. The thought that there were others who wore their clothes not for practicality’s sake, but as an expression of self, seemed a laughable waste of time and money. The only explanation I could surmise as to why someone would… Continue Reading

Daphne Guinness in Conversation

Isabella Blow was a British fashion stylist, editor and muse who nurtured the career of many designers including the late Alexander McQueen and Phillip Treacy. She was passionate, creative and eccentric with a great love of fashion. When Isabella Blow passed away, her friend Daphne Guinness purchased her entire collection of clothes, a portion of which was first displayed in an exhibition at Somerset House in London and now in Sydney at the Powerhouse Museum. To celebrate the opening of Isabella Blow: A Fashionable Life at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, British artist and muse Daphne Guinness… Continue Reading

Designer Profile: Ben Lalic

It’s no secret that the National Graduate Showcase is always at the top of my festival list, and Target’s third outing at VAMFF this year was no exception. With a tantalising group of twelve stellar graduates from around the country; the colour, texture, and pattern were exactly the artistic level of creativity that make me love this event. One designer in particular caught my eye this year with cleverly cut weaves in an athletically inspired collection, UTS graduate Ben Lalic. After the festival I was lucky enough to interview Lalic and learn more about the man behind the label.… Continue Reading

What Does it Mean to be a Supermodel?

What is it that elevates a mere model to the category of super? The term first came to the fore in the 80’s and 90’s and is most closely associated with the legendary models of the time: Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss. These women were and still are household names. They signed multi million dollar contracts, graced the covers of every prominent fashion publication, endorsed products, appeared in music videos, were tabloid fodder and influenced the way we dressed. With the rise of social media, a new breed of ‘supermodel’ has… Continue Reading

Fashionation – A Fashion Event in Cooma

When you think of Cooma, a country town in the Monaro region of New South Wales, you think of Snowy Hydro scheme. Or maybe just snow. What doesn’t immediately come to mind is fashion. But that would be your mistake because for the second time the region is hosting a fashion event.
