Designer Profile – Rockstars and Royalty Part 1

No one understands the power of transformation quite like fashion designer Vicky Kidd-Gallichan. Under her label Rockstars and Royalty, she has created hundreds of incredible custom gowns, witnessing first hand with each of her customers that special feeling a unique piece can create. Having recently decided to shake up the structure of her business, moving away from strictly couture to customisable ready to wear, we sat down with Vicky to to find out the motivations behind the change as well as what is next for this  growing label.   Leiden: What is your background in fashion? Vicky: I am… Continue Reading

Designer Profile: crbn

A little while ago we had the pleasure of attending the launch of a gender neutral clothing label, crbn in Sydney. Designed by Whitney Duan, the first crbn (pronounced carbon) collection featured striking minimalist pieces able to be transformed by the personality of the wearer, no matter their gender. I was so drawn to the collection that I  ordered a piece the very next day. When my slightly subversive bandage skirt arrived, it was just as perfect for my hourglass figure as it had appeared on the man who wore it on the runway. I wanted to find out more… Continue Reading

Designer Profile – Lady Albert

We first had the pleasure of meeting Erin Louise, the talented designer behind Lady Albert at Fashionation in Cooma. We were so intrigued by her designes that we wanted to find out more.   Leiden: What is your earliest fashion memory? Erin: House of Elliot, it’s a TV show set in the 1930s that was on when I was in primary school. I loved it. Pretty sure my friend and I used to get into trouble for not doing our school work because we spent all our time talking about the show. I love the fantasy that fashion can… Continue Reading

Designer Profile: Charly Thorn

Earlier this year, Team Leiden had the pleasure of attending Fashionation, a fashion event in Cooma showcasing both the local design talent and also the regions amazing wool. After all the excitement of the runway show we sat down with the youngest designer to showcase work on the evening, Charly Thorn to find out more about her design process.   Ledien: What is your earliest fashion memory? Charly: My earliest fashion memory would be when I was about 4 years old sitting on the floor of our new house, no furniture just a mattress, a box of Barbie dolls,… Continue Reading

Designer Profile: Liza Alwast of Rapturous

At the gate to Liza Alwast’s home studio I was welcomed by her well dressed, furry support team Holly, Jemma and Hugo. The lovely Liza welcomed me in the door and as soon as I took a step inside I could tell that this woman has been taken over by her creative passion. The walls are lined with racks of the vast sari collection Liza has ready for transformation into the next unique wearable art piece. I was tempted to start inspecting the glorious fabrics to discover their textures, patterns and delicate beading but I soon noticed Liza’s completed… Continue Reading

Designer Profile: Ben Lalic

It’s no secret that the National Graduate Showcase is always at the top of my festival list, and Target’s third outing at VAMFF this year was no exception. With a tantalising group of twelve stellar graduates from around the country; the colour, texture, and pattern were exactly the artistic level of creativity that make me love this event. One designer in particular caught my eye this year with cleverly cut weaves in an athletically inspired collection, UTS graduate Ben Lalic. After the festival I was lucky enough to interview Lalic and learn more about the man behind the label.… Continue Reading

Designer Profile: The Label

The collection shown by Canberran designer Emma O’Rourke under ‘The Label’ was one of the standouts of Canberra’s premier annual fashion event, FASHFEST. The pieces were sophisticated featuring clean lines, wearable cuts, a muted colour palette and subtle prints. I met Emma O’Rourke at the FASHFEST buying day and was instantly drawn to her warm, open personality and obvious passion for her craft. Up close the detail and work in the collection was evident and the clothes were just as desirable off the runway as they appeared on it. Emma grew up in Canberra, completing her Bachelor of Design… Continue Reading
