Eurydice Dixon was let down – It’s time for tangible and effective change

Did you know that since the September 11 attacks in 2001 there have been six people killed by terrorists in Australia? This is itself a hideous thing to think about, and it should make us grateful for the anti-terrorist measures that the government and police force are always undertaking. Did you know that since 1 January 2018 there have been thirty women killed in Australia? That is more than one woman killed each week. Really think about it for a moment. Thirty women. And yet, in the federal budget this year, Malcolm Turnbull’s government committed more money to a… Continue Reading

Once you realise that Love Actually is actually bad, can you still enjoy it?

It’s a pretty well known fact now that Love Actually is actually a deeply problematic film. Lindy West has written a truly spectacular take down that you can read in full here , but to sum up the main points, the women barely ever talk, if they do have a bit of a personality they’re punished for it, most of the men are actually terrible people who are somehow magically all rewarded with a woman at then end of the film and then, you know, the whole woman being flattered by her husband’s best friend literally stalking her thing.… Continue Reading

Mental Health and Self Love

Self Love September is all about loving ourselves, and so far we have focused on learning to love our bodies. As was said previously, this was because the weight-loss industry is currently doubling down on its efforts to make us feel like we need their help to make our bodies acceptable for summer. All this is complete rubbish, our bodies are already totally fine for summer, whatever they look like. Self love isn’t always just about loving our bodies, though, it is also about looking after our minds and caring for our mental health. I’ll admit, I can be… Continue Reading

Is social media making you miserable?

We all know that social media is a huge part of society these days. We probably also know that it can have a pretty negative impact on our mental health. One of the areas that this negativity can hit us the hardest is body image and self esteem. There are a thousand-and-one articles about how harmful the ‘Insta-perfect’ life can be, but it is always worth reminding ourselves that these picture perfect lives are unrealistic and probably aren’t even representative of actual lives of the people posting them. With this in mind, chances are social media is still going… Continue Reading

Learning to Counter ‘Bikini Body’ Bullshit

It’s September, so what I like to call ‘Bikini Body Bullshit’ is about to reach a fever pitch. That time of year when every second banner on Facebook is reminding you that it’s time to start starving yourself and loathing your body in an effort to be ready for summer. Heaven forbid any of us forget what a terrible sin it is not to have a perfectly flat stomach and thigh gap when the warmer months roll around! So much will be telling us to cut out sugar, grains, dairy, meat, egg yolks, all sustenance, else we look like… Continue Reading

We Are Ariana, We Are Manchester

This week I, like most people, was horrified, heartbroken and furious to hear about the terrorist attack on the Manchester Arena at the end of Ariana Grande’s concert on Monday night. Terrorist attacks are always sickening to hear about, but something about this particular attack feels incredibly personal. Already in my life I have shed a lot of tears for the atrocities that terrorists have committed, but the heart-wrenching tears of devastation and rage I have shed this week are something new. Unfortunately, we live in a world where terror attacks are happening more and more often. Every week… Continue Reading

Just Be Wrap Up

A couple Thursday’s ago I had the pleasure of attending the Just Be Revolution Launch at the QT Hotel in Canberra. The Just Be Revolution has been set up by Vicky Kidd-Gallichan as a means of giving people the confidence to be themselves, and to teach everyone not to judge others by their appearance. Just walking into the space at the beginning of the evening was enough to encourage everyone to feel good. The red carpet was laid out for photos, huge letters spelled out L O V E and Paulini was there to welcome everyone into the launch… Continue Reading
