How to Style – New Years Eve

I have always felt that New Years Eve is over-hyped and over-rated. When I was younger there was always so much anticipation surrounding this ‘mythical’ evening. What would we wear? Where would we go? What would we drink? Who might we kiss? No matter how rigorously we planned each and every year our evening of debauchery never lived up to our exceptions. Even when left to chance, we still ended up having had a mediocre evening and a hangover to boot. As I got older I realised I didn’t need to go out to have what is generally deemed an… Continue Reading

How to Style – 5 Festive Outfits

At Leiden we love dressing to theme and there is nothing that floats our boat quite like festive dressing. Rather than reaching for your tried and trusted Christmas t-shirt or jumper (although these are both very good options), we suggest you rifle through your closet and see what else you can find in a Christmas colour palette and have a play. After such a rifle in my own wardrobe, I present to you a few festive options. My modus operendi was to make use of anything red, green and metallic.   A Subtle Nod to The Season Top: Vintage Chanel… Continue Reading

Once you realise that Love Actually is actually bad, can you still enjoy it?

It’s a pretty well known fact now that Love Actually is actually a deeply problematic film. Lindy West has written a truly spectacular take down that you can read in full here , but to sum up the main points, the women barely ever talk, if they do have a bit of a personality they’re punished for it, most of the men are actually terrible people who are somehow magically all rewarded with a woman at then end of the film and then, you know, the whole woman being flattered by her husband’s best friend literally stalking her thing.… Continue Reading

Leiden Book Club Book 9 – Persuasion

Jane Austen has never been a particularly large blip on my literary radar. My mother has been a voracious fan since long before I was part of the world; and after I did become a part of it she would often put forward the Austen catalogue as a recommendation to me. I would smile and nod, acknowledging that no bookshelf is complete without a few Austens present, but never quite getting around to taking the plunge. This changed with Emma, which I only picked up in order to impress my future de-facto wife (also Emma). And while I found… Continue Reading

Cat Person: Starting a Conversation

Like a great many people in the world I eagerly devoured Cat Person, a short story written by Kristen Roupenian and published in The New Yorker on December 11. This powerful piece of fiction, which had me hooked from the first line, has set the internet ablaze in a way fiction rarely does, receiving praise, backlash and backlash to that backlash. Divisive as it has been, Cat Person has ignited a conversation about sex, gender, power and consent. The short story focuses on two characters: Margot, a twenty year old university student and Robert, an older man Margot meets at the artsy cinema where she works.… Continue Reading
