Does FASHFEST Still Pass the FASH-test?

Note from the Author: When researching and writing this article I have found myself on a journey clouded by passionate opinions, varied perceptions and anonymous disclosures. I have questioned the ethics of speaking up versus staying quiet and what the role of a publication such as this is and should be within the Canberra fashion community. In publishing this story Leiden hopes to spark a conversation about fashion, design and creativity and what we all, from the people who sew each garment through to those sitting in the stands admiring them, want that to be celebrated in our home… Continue Reading

FASHFEST – The Stats

When researching this piece we gathered information made publicly available on the FASHFEST website. To calculate our statistics we looked at all shows presented in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and categorised them as as either a show presented by an independent designer or label or a show presented by a boutique or shopping centre. Some presentations including that made by The Canberra Vintage Collective in 2016 and The Salvos this year, featured vintage or upcycled clothing. These were counted under the non-designer category. We have also looked at what proportion of the designers presenting are based in Canberra at the… Continue Reading

Treatment Review: Microblading

I’m not sure about you but I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with brows.   When I found out about feather tattoo and microblading, I was intrigued. My first thoughts were of my mum’s friends with their blue stained tattoo brows which I definitely was not a fan of. Microblading or feathering tattoos have come a long way since then. Rather than a solid block of colour, hair strokes are drawn on, mimicking natural brow hairs. I recently did mine and cannot be happier. I do not need to fill in my brows any more as I wake… Continue Reading

Leiden Book Club Book 7 – The Wonder

An English nurse — seemingly cold, discerning and aloof on first impression — is brought to a small Irish village to observe the ‘miracle’ of an eleven-year-old girl who has fasted for months and believes herself to be living off manna from heaven. It is Lib Wright’s job to keep watch over this young girl to prove whether she is a miracle or a fraud, but like any other good book, her mission is not as easy as it would appear. The Wonder is an exploration of faith, fasting and morality, and is based on the many cases of… Continue Reading
