How to Style – Five Ways with Coloured Stockings

I have recently been re-watching one of my favourite sitcoms of all time The Nanny.  Although I have seen it a zillion times I am just as in awe of Fran Fine’s style today as I was as a child. While my love for Fran and her clothes could take up a whole article of its own (don’t worry I’m working on it), our How-to Style segment this week is inspired by one particular aspect of her style: her ability to nail wearing coloured stockings.

Despite owning many pairs of coloured stockings myself, I have always still gravitated towards black or navy stockings and let the colour of my clothes do the talking. However the combined efforts of Fran Fine and  Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga telling me coloured stockings and tights are worth my consideration, I thought it was time to experiment. So here we have five ways with coloured stockings.

Butter Yellow

Stockings: Ambra

Top: Marks and Spencer

Skirt: Country Road

Bag: Chloe

Shoes: Country Road

The Look: When I was gathering together all my coloured stockings I thought the yellow would be the pair I would have the most difficulty wearing. I can’t even remember why I bought them but I suspect it was for a costume. As yellow stockings are a pretty bod statement on their own I decided to go hard or go home and pair them with a yellow floral blouse. The navy skirt anchors all the colour while a pop of burgandy also helps to take the sting out of all that yellow.

Burnt Orange

Stockings: Ambra

Dress: H&M

Belt and Bag: Mimco

Shoes: Vintage Bally

The Look: I love this dress and every single time I wear it I always reach for black tights. As soon as I pulled this pair out my tight collection I knew that the burnt orange colour would be a perfect match for the print of the fabric. Instead of opting for black accessories I chose warm tan and brown giving the whole look an autumn theme.

Cherry Bomb

Stockings: Unknown mystery brand

Dress: Kenzo

Shoes: Vintage Versace

Necklace: Vintage beads from my mum

The Look: There is something about the combination of navy and this pinky, maroony red that makes me very happy. The combination is colourful yet chic.

Indigo-go

Stockings: Ambra

Top: Sportsgirl

Jacket and Skirt: Country Road

Boots: Kenzo

The Look: With this look I tried to do the exact opposite of what I would normally do which is anchor a colourful outfit with black tights and instead paired blue stockings and a blue top with all black.

Jewel Bright

Stockings: Unkown mystery brand

Coat: Vintage

Top: Basque

Skirt and Shoes: Topshop

The Look: For this look I mixed all jewel tones. These tights are actually purple but once combined with oxblood and forest green you can barely tell what colour they are anymore. A lovely camel coat anchors all the colour and killer heels give the look a sexy edge.
