Slow Fashion Workshop
The rise of fast fashion and the increasing consumer demand for the latest trends has cemented the fashion industry as one of the world’s biggest polluters. Textile waste, toxic chemicals, and pesticides used in farming are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the impact that the clothes we buy and wear have on the environment. An increasing number of designers and fashion labels are stepping up to make a change in the way they practice business and if you are thinking of starting a label today, there is no question that it should be an… Continue Reading
Leiden Book Club Book 2 – The Fountainhead
Towards the end of 2016, while exploring different books for Leiden’s Book Club reading list, it quickly became apparent to me that a true Leiden reading list should reflect the literary taste of our contributors. And so, At Leiden’s Christmas party, speaking to other contributors about their favourite books, browsing our editor’s bookshelves in between conversations to gather courage for the next (as any introvert would, of course): that is how The Fountainhead came to be on our Book Club reading list; a novel much loved by fellow contributor, Miriam Walsh. I had not previously heard of Ayn Rand… Continue Reading
Rebel Muse Second Birthday
It’s no secret we think Alicia Xyrakis is amazing. She opened her first fashion boutique, Rebel Muse, on Lonsdale street in Braddon. Then, as if running one successful business wasn’t enough, came the opening of her second store: Peachy Keen. A mecca for accessories, Rebel Muse’s little sister is just as capable of making us reach for our credit card as its sibling. And now, in what feels like no time at all, comes Rebel Muse’s second birthday. Naturally, a huge celebration was in order. Attendees were treated to an evening of fun at Lazy Su (if you haven’t… Continue Reading
How to Style – Gingham
Here at Leiden we don’t normally advocate for trends; we believe everyone should dress however they damn well please. Sometimes, however, a trend comes along that makes us want to jump on its bandwagon. This week we take a good hard look at gingham and monochrome dressing. Fun and Flirty Gingham Hero: Skirt from Country Road Top: H&M Shoes: Miu Miu Why it works: By keeping the colour palette simple, the gingham print takes centre stage. we balanced the flirty skirt length with a long sleeve shirt, but kept things fun with flouncy frill on the sleeve. Sexy… Continue Reading
Fitting in at ModCloth
It’s pretty safe to say most retailers are expanding into the digital world and increasing their online presence by making their products available online. Last year alone, online retail in Australia grew at five times that of the more traditional ‘brick and mortar’ sales. It seems counter-intuitive, then, that online retailer ModCloth would do the complete opposite. The end of 2016 marked the opening of the first ‘brick and mortar’ store for the retailer; up until then they had been doing all of their business online. The store was opened in Austin, Texas. A city known just as much… Continue Reading
A Bloody Adaptation – Adele Querol on Dracula
There is no denying that vampires have been the fantasy creature de jour for some time now. We have Twilight to thank for that, plus the slew of other vampire related programming that followed. But where did our fascination with these pale-faced, sharp-toothed beings begin? Now, vampires have been around a long time, but it wasn’t until 1897 when Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula brought them to life in their modern context. This gothic thriller unleashed the now iconic characters of Count Dracula and Abraham Van Helsing on the public. Since it was first published, the novel has inspired many… Continue Reading
