Paper Folding at Eden with Benja Harney

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an origami enthusiast. I’ve always found the repetition, and the concentration it requires stills my mind like nothing else; when I’m working with paper, I am at peace. So when my editor informed me that Eden, a series of holistic wellness workshops hosted by the Canberra Centre, was putting on a paper-craft master-class, and that I was to report on said class, I was, to say the very least, rather pleased. The event was to be run by Benja Harney, a ‘paper engineer’ based in Sydney, who has been in… Continue Reading

Fast Food Outlet or Supermarket Chain?

Why do we always demonise the large fast food chains (McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut) for the apparent poor quality of the food they peddle? Sure they sell food high in fat, salt and sugar and it’s priced so the food is affordable to everyone but who really sells the unhealthiest food? The number of McDonalds restaurants in Canberra back in the 1980s was two, now there are over 15 and all are conveniently located in more suburban locations with a few located in the larger shopping precincts like Civic and Belconnen; the same applies to KFC. But what about… Continue Reading

Designer Profile – Lady Albert

We first had the pleasure of meeting Erin Louise, the talented designer behind Lady Albert at Fashionation in Cooma. We were so intrigued by her designes that we wanted to find out more.   Leiden: What is your earliest fashion memory? Erin: House of Elliot, it’s a TV show set in the 1930s that was on when I was in primary school. I loved it. Pretty sure my friend and I used to get into trouble for not doing our school work because we spent all our time talking about the show. I love the fantasy that fashion can… Continue Reading

Paris Fashion Week – A/W 16/17

Rounding out our coverage of fashion month comes our favourite collections from Paris fashion week, accompanied by illustrations from our very own Judy Kuo.   Balenciaga   The debut collection from Demna Gvasalia (of Vetements fame) was one of the most hotly anticipated of Paris fashion week. Anyone who feared that the house signatures of Christobal Balanciage would be lost or muddied by street-wear influence could breathe a sigh of relief after the first look appeared on the runway. Opera coats, trapeze dresses, bubble skirts, and cocoon coats were all given a Vetements-style update (an opera coat/puffa jacket worn by… Continue Reading

Review – Laura Mercier Highlighters

Highlighters. So many to choose from. Shimmery, glittery, pearly, embossed with brand names and swirly patterns that make them look so pretty you won’t want to ever put your little paws in them. So about a year ago when I officially became a Beauty Bitch for an entire cosmetic department, I would walk around trying to familiarise myself with everyone’s star products so that I would be on top of current trends and so that I would know what the hell I was talking about when people asked me about products from different brands. Look I’ll be honest here,… Continue Reading

A Chat with Mondecreen

Our favourite musical act from Canberra fashion festival, Fashfest, was Canberra based electronic duo, Mondecreen. We sat down with Roshan Fernandez and George Stavridis (Stavo as Roshan asked us to refer to him) to find out what drew them to participating in Canberra’s largest fashion event.   Leiden: Describe Mondecreen’s sound Mondecreen: We make funky dance tunes that induce strutting and enable one to feel cooler than they actually are. A few drinks are recommended to enhance the experience.   L: How long have you guys been making music together? M: Somewhere around 3-4 years now.   L: What… Continue Reading
