When travelling it can be difficult to narrow down the multitude of products lining your bathroom vanity to just a few essentials. Do I take my weekend facemask? How many lipsticks are appropriate? Should I take that glitter shadow palette just in case I need to create a last minute party look for a night out?
My general approach to packing is to over pack. No matter how many advice articles I read about other glamorous people who have apparently mastered the art of minimal packing, I just can’t do it. I continue to get that nagging feeling in my stomach that I might just need that extra dress, jacket or indeed fifth shade of lipstick and that if I don’t squeeze said item in my suitcase I will live to regret it.
I am also a big shopper which combined with my approach to packing has lead to a lot of jamming of things in suitcases and carry on, schlepping far more than I can actually carry around on public transport and tearful pleading with airport staff not to charge me excess luggage.
So with a trip to Europe imminent I have decided to make a conscious effort to, as my father constantly advises me, ‘pack lightly’. When heading overseas or indeed anywhere, I usually just take everything I have from my shower and makeup bag, put it in a travel bag and declare myself done.
This time however in the interest of saving space and being a better person I bought some little clear plastic bottles and decanted some of my normal shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, cleanser and body moisturiser, along with little pots of my weekly treatment mask and peel. So far: so space and cost effective. I will admit to packing a full size face moisturiser and deodorant, because really, you shouldn’t scrimp on those.
In terms of my makeup bag I was really ruthless with myself and reduced my options to a few essentials:
- Mecca Cosmetica ‘To Save Face’ Sunscreen
- Napolean Perdis ‘Auto Pilot Calm and Correct’ Primer
- Shu Umeura Cushion Compact Foundation
- Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Swish and Pop Blush
- Clinique Lid Smoothie in ‘Gingerly’
- Burberry Beauty Eyebrow Definer
- YSL Baby Doll Mascara
- Lipstick Queen lipstick in ‘Frog Prince’
For my hair I have packed a travel hair dryer and straightener (I promise they are teeny tiny) as well as travel size bottles of O&M Atonic and Surf Bomb. And my trusty Mason & Pearson comb of course.
In this day and age you know you can’t go anywhere without sunscreen so I have packed my Aesop pump bottle. It smells divine and really does make wearing sunscreen a pleasure.
So there you have it, my beauty travel edit. What’s yours?
