Designer Profile: Liza Alwast of Rapturous

At the gate to Liza Alwast’s home studio I was welcomed by her well dressed, furry support team Holly, Jemma and Hugo. The lovely Liza welcomed me in the door and as soon as I took a step inside I could tell that this woman has been taken over by her creative passion. The walls are lined with racks of the vast sari collection Liza has ready for transformation into the next unique wearable art piece. I was tempted to start inspecting the glorious fabrics to discover their textures, patterns and delicate beading but I soon noticed Liza’s completed… Continue Reading

Let’s get Lush – A Review of a Handful of Lush Products

I have always loved walking down the street and then smelling the unique smell of a Lush Cosmetics store from three doors down. To me, Lush is like visiting the Weasley’s shop in Harry Potter: I walk in and I just want to touch and smell and experience everything. This is because Lush make products “from fresh organic fruits and vegetables, the finest essential oils, and safe synthetics.” They also only buy ingredients “from companies that do not conduct or commission tests on animals” (from the Lush website). This guilt free sense of values, combined with the fact that… Continue Reading

Condolences to Gen X and the Boomers

So, 2016. Got anything you want to tell us? OK, allow me. You’ve taken a few too many legends and it’s time you saw the impact on us. Just this year, two of the best in the music industry crossed over into the next realm and it begs the question: is God, The Universe or whoever is in charge of who kicks, supremely pissed off at celebrities, particularly musicians and if so, what did they do to invite this eeny meeny miny moe of death amongst themselves? As a Generation X kid who grew up in the 80s and 90s,… Continue Reading

Gucci x Chatsworth House

Not long after we recovered from the latest installment of Alessandro Michele’s unrelentingly ‘more is more is more’ aesthetic vision for Gucci, an exciting announcement has been made. After showing its latest resort collection at Westminster Abbey in London, the Italian fashion house will continue its love affair with Britain in a new partnership with the historic Chatsworth House. For those of you who don’t know, Chatsworth House is a large stately home in Derbyshire, England. It is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and has been suggested as Jane Austen’s point of inspiration for Mr Darcy’s family… Continue Reading

Meal Planning – What Type of Planner are You?

What type of meal planner are you? You may not be a meal planner at all. Of all the topics I get asked about, the most frequent is meal planning. If you’re like me, you are consistent and follow routine. This means your breakfast, lunch and snacks are pretty much the same for most days and you have some slight variation on the weekend. Dinners are where I get most of my variety, but even then, it is usually some meat, some grains like pasta or rice and a good serve of vegetables, with a glass of red. On… Continue Reading

How to Avoid a Bad Hair Day – The Products You Need Now

So this morning I rolled out of bed all ready for a fresh day. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, what a beautiful day it was going to be! Then as I walked into the bathroom I caught a glimpse of myself on the mirror. Stopped dead in my tracks, I stared at the ghastly mess of hair on top of my head. Bad hair day. Luckily for me I have a huge arsenal of hair product with which I can use to tame the dreaded beast. But it got me thinking about the days before I… Continue Reading

On Style and Socks

“Menswear is about subtlety. It’s about good style and good taste.” – Alexander McQueen   When I was a boy I took little interest in the clothing I wore. It was, to me, a purely utilitarian thing, designed to protect ones modesty from the elements, and to preserve the modesty of ones elements. It served these purposes and no more. The thought that there were others who wore their clothes not for practicality’s sake, but as an expression of self, seemed a laughable waste of time and money. The only explanation I could surmise as to why someone would… Continue Reading
