How to Shop for Bronzer

So. Summer’s gone and when you glance in the mirror, you realise you’re looking frighteningly like Edward Scissorhands. What do you do? You open the contents of your dusty, foundation smeared makeup bag, and stare at your bronzer and wonder “How on earth will I ever go from a 1980’s mystical creature, to bronze goddess Jo-Lo?” You stare back down at your compact, containing that scary looking tanned pressed powder, and decide it’s better to leave it in there or risk looking like a gingerbread man. Don’t fret! The bronze look is very easily achievable, and is universally flattering… Continue Reading

How to Shop the S/S 16 Season

Why are we telling you how to shop the latest Spring/Summer collections when winter is coming? Unfortunately for us here in Australia, the release of the international designer collections follows the seasons of the northern hemisphere. Just as we are getting ready to unearth our opaques and cardigans from the back of our wardrobes, our overseas friends are approaching summer. This means if you like to keep up to date with the latest international fashion trends you can’t necessarily dress for the weather. But don’t worry the trends that have emerged from the S/S runways will inform what we… Continue Reading

A love of Fashion and Literature

On a cold Sunday night in Canberra, Miriam and I found ourselves embracing our inner nerds and attending the Jane Austen Festival. We were met with some skepticism from our friends but stood our ground. Surely anyone with a love for Austen could understand our desire to dress up as a Bennet, Dashwood or Woodhouse? That’s what we told ourselves anyway as we donned our Regency finest to attend our first ball. As we did not have an appropriate gown stashed away in the back of our cupboards and we are quite poor, we had to improvise an appropriate outfit.… Continue Reading

An Interview: Belinda Humphris of Claire Inc.

I love collecting vintage, but I especially love collecting vintage Chanel. Belinda Humphris of online boutique Claire Inc. has been my number one source for such treasures (and many others) for a number of years now. Not only does she curate a stand out collection of rare and unique vintage pieces from the likes of Chanel, Issey Miyake, Sonia Rykiel, Moschino and Comme Des Garcons, Belinda offers an amazing level of customer service. I have always admired Belinda and so thought it was high time I chatted with her about her business.   Emma: How did Claire Inc. begin?… Continue Reading

Diet Trends for 2016

Another new year and a fresh round of updated and improved diet and nutrition trends flood the newspapers, social media, and people’s mouths. It makes sense to promote new diet trends at the start of the year because that’s when many people set their health and fitness goals, or resolutions for the New Year. This year, depending on who you are following, you will find a huge range of people spruiking what you should eat, how much you should eat, when you should eat it and, of course, what you should avoid. This year the wonderful bunch from Appetite… Continue Reading

Outback Parisienne

Here we explore the contrast of high quality design from Paris and the harsh Australian landscape. While almost all pieces are vintage Chanel, the cut and fabrication is timeless; no piece would look out of place in a modern wardrobe. Natural hair is windswept, while bronzed cheeks and eyes echo the colour of the grass. Melbourne-based dancer, barre instructor and Leiden Contributor, Kara Burdack was our only choice to model the stunning pieces for this shoot.                     Credits Photography: Emma Batchelor and Claire Gatenby Hair and Makeup: Emma Batchelor Styling: Emma… Continue Reading

How to – 70s Disco Makeup gets Modern

The 70’s have been making a comeback in the fashion world for a few seasons now, and that decade has extended its influence to makeup as well. This look, which we have named ’70’s disco’ is perfect for a night on the town. It is essentially a smokey eye livened up with jewel tones.   To make those eyes pop you want to keep your base simple. Just like we mentioned in our last How-to (A Beauty Basic: Bold Brow and Lip), if you are blessed with amazing skin you are good to go but otherwise give yourself the… Continue Reading
